SNOW-VEMBER

Monika's Reminders

Kids - and everyone - blossoms with praise and appreciation.
  Serve liberally.

***

Correct kids as you would like to be corrected -
gently and as firmly as necessary but without shaming them.
Correct adults as rarely as possible.

***

Everyone makes mistakes - more often than we want to admit -
so be patient with yourself.

***

Here's a clue: No one wants to know you are smarter or faster or cooler
or more important than they are.

***

Remember your judgement of others is a reflection of yourself.  Listen to what you say about others for a pretty accurate description of yourself.

***

Seek Mentors.  We all have a lot to learn.

***

Haughtiness is easy.  Humility isn't.  Which is more appealing?

****

I've heard it often, and so have you:

Two ears.  One Mouth.
Listen more (twice as much?) than you talk.

Bangkok Chicken for the Win!
1.  Served as above with Salad.  The sauce is amazing.
2.  Sliced the white meat off the bone and poured the homemade thai-style sauce over.
Served with a side dish of Red Lentil Rice and green salad.
(Jerry was not fond of meatless burgers.)
3.   Hearty Chicken Soup with a dollop of Red Garlic Chili Sauce

Iced Tea, anyone?

Whimsical Rooftop Setting at the Willow Fence Tea Room
(for the adventurous type)

Chicken Soup - the final Red Lentil patty went into the soup kettle with
an extra helping of chicken broth, fresh cilantro for garnish and Parmesan shavings -
 a quick, hearty supper.

  • Monday - Meatloaf from Sunday, baked potatoes, green salad.

Not a fan of the crock-pot version for cooking meatloaf.
It turned out too dry and lacked the nice browned
touch that it gets when baked in the oven.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

  • Tuesday - Grilled T-Bone Steak, hashbrowns, salad.  Thaw stew meat for tomorrow.

  • Wednesday - Beef Stew

The meat is best if cut in bite sized pieces and shaken in a bag with flour salt and pepper.  Saute in olive oil.  Remove meat, cook onions.  Add a covering beef broth to onions, potatoes, garlic, carrots, and stew meat.  Cook for an hour or two.  Watch that the stew remains soupy and add more broth if needed.  I use Better Than Boullion to enhance the broth.  I have tried adding wine to the mixture, but like it better without.  This is very good with chicken broth instead of beef broth.  Serve with Green Beans and/or fresh broccoli florets and sliced tomatoes.

  • Thursday - Leftovers!  :)  No cook day!

  • Friday - Hamburgers, Potato Salad, Baked Beans, Dill Pickles.

Thinking about making pomodori al forno.
(Makes it easy to skip the hamburger bun.)

  • Saturday - Tacos - or Taco Salad if it's warm enough to enjoy salad.

  • Sunday - Stir Fry Chicken and Vegetables with rice.

I have lettuce, cabbage, carrots, onions, garlic, green beans, cucumber.
Will need to buy chicken, broccoli, tortilla shells, tomatoes, avocado.

  1. I love the photos of your gourmet cooking adventures! It makes those dishes look super tasty! Once in awhile I wish my hubby liked soups better. Will just have to make them for myself for lunch in smaller portions. The soups I like best have no tomato products in them :)

Enjoying all your photos as usual. Have you tried the Willow House rooftop table? *grin* You are the adventurous type after all...but I can't really see the safety people allowing you up there without being tied off :D

My girls are eager for snow. One day they were sure that the persistent fog that lasted through the morning meant snow would be forthcoming. When that theory didn't work out, they developed a new one: "When every leaf has fallen off all the trees, will there be snow THEN??" Last year we didn't have much snow but they still fondly remember our New Year's trip to BF to profuse amounts of snow and lots of sledding. Maybe this year we will have more snow here.

    Love LW in SE WA

    1. Thank you and thanks for sending the shed pictures. That is an awesome project. Love hearing the cute comments the girls make, too. And I wish you snow.

  2. Snow is lots of fun. Tea parties are sure a lot warmer (generally speaking - this hypothetically would be the exception - did she glue the table cloth down and nail the flower pot? Otherwise I'm sure they would be in the next county by now). I remember tiny hands painfully cold and red. Chapped, reddened cheeks. Lost mittens. Kids too anxious to get back outside to let me warm their hands on my cheek. The excitement! And how quickly they got cold and hungry, so with shining eyes and red faces, they came back in, leaving all their snow gear in the doorway and tripping over it. And how glad at that moment I was, to get to be their mom. Despite the wall to wall clumps of snow, missing mittens, heaps of coats, hats and snow pants, the excitement was infectious and energizing.

The best meals are simple. Nothing so tasty as a perfectly grilled thick pork chop, tender and juicy, served with your favorite dipping sauce and a salad. Jerry does like variety and likes me to save money, too, so soups work well for us. He is quite satisfied with tacos, spaghetti and hamburgers and the occasional baked potato with toppings. His own specialty is a ham and bean soup that he likes me to make. He used the recipe directions on the package of dry navy beans and we thickened it with dried potato flakes.

  3. Nice job on the blog. Thought provoking reminders which I need to remember better. Like your photos. You are such a great photographer. Yummy recipes. Hope to try out the Bangkok chicken. Great description of the children in the winter in the comments section. Enjoyed this. Tired now, just off work from a catering job for the local Mom's Network fundraiser. Tomorrow is a cooking school day at the chocolate shop in Dayton. Should be fun and I will see if he is willing to let me do a post on it.

  4. Yikes! You go, girl. I've been wanting to catch up - looks like I'm going to have to get off my duff, if that's going to happen! I did have a fun excursion with my camera all repaired and three lenses to use - but then have to get downright sassy with myself to get back to the bookkeeping that I have to do! Wishing you a great and refreshing day at the cooking school.
