Defying Description

Learn to... be what you are, and learn to resign with a good grace all that you are not.

Henri Frederic Amiel

“Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not.”

Traffic Jam

Too often travel, instead of broadening the mind,
merely lengthens the conversation.

~Elizabeth Drew

I take a simple view of life: keep your eyes open and get on with it.

Laurence Olivier
Rainy Day in Chandler

As in nature, as in art, so in grace; it is rough treatment that gives souls, as well as stones, their luster.

Thomas Guthrie

Inner beauty, too, needs occasionally to be told it is beautiful.  ~Robert Brault

The Plot

 Some little truth I wish
And seek in depths abiding
A profoundly buried answer
In everlasting hiding.

Perhaps in quiet moment
I could gain in plain reflection
That simply given knowledge gift,
 The guide which shows perfection.

Together Mother Nature
Combined perhaps a lot
With Mr. Circumstance and
Contrived this mixed up little plot.

Bad luck, a snare it was
I could even think to say,
Refusing unwisely to go cheerily
About my merry way.

Insistently my plan was foiled
A fatal trap was set,
And caught so unwarily,
I firmly said, "Not that!"

Then announcing freedom
A  little voice instead
In ultimate betrayal
Agreed and bowed its head.

Buzzard's Roost- *count'em.

“It can hardly be a coincidence
that no language on earth has
ever produced the expression,
'As pretty as an airport.”

― Douglas AdamsThe Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul

My Decorator, My Adviser

I have found out that there ain't no surer way to find out whether you like people or hate them than to travel with them.

~Mark Twain

  1. Thank you for putting pictures of your AZ trip. Love all the updates on the people and projects. Pictures are worth 1000 words, right? My favorites are the pictures from the plane. Just a cool perspective.

I tried counting buzzards. I got 3. Then I zoomed in and I got 6. Guess I'm just not familiar enough with buzzards. :)

Did I "read" your poem accurately? (Along with a well-placed quote) Airport/plane troubles? *Sigh* I have only been on 2 plane trips in my life - still - not a fan.

  2. The buzzards were easier to count off camera. Telephoto didn't help much there.

I am adjusting quite well to the airplanes but my workouts are another matter. I do struggle along...so many things that interfer, and then there is my own resistance that I have been trying to figure out how to conquer.

An inner struggle...the worse procrastinator ever? Probably not, but still. Battling feeling weak.

  3. Oh yes, workouts. Guess I did mis-read the poem :) I didn't go to the gym for 3 weeks and the 2 weeks before that had been really inconsistent. I think it's summer. Busy. Hot. Anyway, it cooled down a few degrees so I made it 3 times last week, plus our weekly ultimate frisbee game. Not too bad I guess. But I hear you. Most times I would much rather sit and eat cookies or ice cream instead of putting forth the effort to go to the gym. I went yesterday and I can hardly walk today, I'm so sore! Basically the only reason I go is so I am not at home. And an hour without the kids is nice too. Helps me keep my sanity, which I feel I barely have a grip on lately. My youngest hit the terrible "two and a half's" this week or SOMEthing. She has really been acting up. Humph.

  4. I think the terrible two's skipped our house, I can't say I know what they are, for all I've heard other people went through them. Sounds like my computer is making up for it though. Good luck with your little darlin'.

Totally hot workout today, didn't even finish and I am dripping. Sigh.

  5. Just a wee bit of a blog before husband comes home for lunch. I need to run out and get lunch meat for his lunch. Oh how I enjoy your photos, poems, quotes and responses. You amaze me and it is far beyond me to put words together like that. No way can I do that! The work out... You two amaze me with your dedication to keeping fit. Last weekend I worked Saturday 11 hours and Sunday 8 hours. Saturday was a wedding so we were hauling tables, chairs, and all manner of other things to make the wedding happen. As we strongly did it again for take down at 10:30 P.M. my boss and I agreed we didn't need a gym that day. Yesterday I pulled weeds for an hour and "strengthened" (aka pain) my back. Then went out again later and picked a 1/2 gallon of strawberries. More strong (painful) back.

Okay, now I jet off to the store to pick up something for lunch and supper. I feel love for you.

    1. Yes, I agree, those days count! Sorry about the back pain. Ab work helps and will protect your knees. Squats might relieve it some, too. Just a few, and see. Check out youtube for instructions so no injuries. Jumpy legs for me. Liquid calcium was recommended. I'm much better now.

  6. P.S. As I arrived at their house the other day the wee ones age 2 & 4 came scrambling toward the door making welcome sounds ready for hugs and eat you up kisses. What a delight. Everyone should experience that. Looking forward to giving daughter a break as soon as some of this rental stuff is out of the way.

  7. Finally got to your blog today! I save it for a treat to myself. Dont talk about working out as I sit at my computer. We are all at very different places in our lives, aren't we? I love your posts as usual. I did have a fantastic evening with Heidi a couple of days ago. I thought I should stay home and work, but decided that since it was her birthday week, I would go. What fun!! I don't even know how many pairs of shoes were bought by us three gals. Brynn got two pair herself. Went with Steve today to make sure someone was with him in case he fell off a steep roof. he didn't, thankfully. I stayed in the shade and still got a sunburn(not complaining, it isn't bad, but how could it be, I was in the shade). Andrea's recital was amazing. Then to Ellensburg to be with a friend who lost her husband to the same thing Janaleah had. A lovely day with her. So lots of good times this week, now back to work. I can't wait til the end of August and vacation with Amanda(who is having a ball in Rome) and hopefully you, Monika! I can't wait!

    1. Will be fun to hear more about Rome and see pictures. Love that city. So interesting. Great food. My mouth starts watering for Italian food. (In Italy, not here, so much.)

Shopping sounds fun, being with Brynn and Heidi, fun. Shoes, fun. Sorry about the loss to your friend, but glad you could spend time with her. Haven't seen Patti this week...oh, boy, need to call her tonight. But made some progress on this computer deal. Amazing considering all the trouble I had, how close I am to up, just lost a BUNCH of pictures, but will keep trying to recover them. I know! Looking forward to being with you! EEEE!
